Astley's gospel tinged Cry For Help marked his return after leaving the PWL stable. Co-written by Climie Fisher's Rob Fisher, and featuring Andrae Crouch and his choir (who have done work for other notable artists, such as Madonna) Cry For Help gave Astley credibility as a singer-songwriter, proving he was capable of more than manufactured pop music. US promotion included a performance of Cry For Help on "The Arsenio Hall Show". Rick appears much more self confident in his second appearance on Arsenio. Cry For Help was the only hit single off the Free album, as the others stalled one-by-one.
