Review by Alun Waterhouse
“Sleeping” is Rick’s first release in almost 8 years – and was it worth the wait…
Track 1 is the radio edit and to be honest this is the best track to release to an unsuspecting public. It starts with an atmospheric vocal fade-in that moves quickly onto the intro, complete with more phasing vocal effects and an up-tempo beat. The first verse starts and you realise that Rick has lost none of his talent as there is no mistaking his rich vocals – I would even argue that his voice is sounding better than ever, maybe smoother. All the way through this track there are some really nice effects, the guitar effects are really nice and the vocoder effect in the bridge is well hidden but worth finding – you can hear this effect more prominently in the other mixes. Background vocals are not provided by Rick and they blend well with his smooth vocals. My only criticism of this track has to be that the bass line is not very prominent which means that this track will probably not get played in any of the clubs… lucky we have Todd Terry on hand then, isn't it…
Track 2 is Tee's Radio Mix - Hooray, straight away we get a thumping bass line with a really up-tempo club style beat – just what the DJ ordered. There is actually less background music in this track so you can really concentrate on the bass and vocals. As this track closes we hear vocals that have been faded-out from the first track.
Track 3 is the TNT Radio Mix – and again it's another Todd Terry mix. This time it starts with a 15 second ambient intro featuring a really nice guitar riff then it's back into the usual Todd Terry beat and bass-line. Nothing new in this one I am afraid.
Track 4 is the UK Radio Mix and let's hope that this is not released in the UK as it's not really the best mix on the cd. Another Todd Terry Mix but this time we are introduced to a different bass line and some strange musical “stabs” that do very little for the song. The only positive element of this track is that the drums are particularly louder on this track than on most of the others.
Track 5 is the hard to spell Tiefschwarz Wake up Mix – “Jet black” are 2 German DJ brothers who have worked with artists such as Mousse T and Ultra Nate. This mix almost makes “Sleeping” into a different song which is either a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you like from a mix. We definitely have a more complex percussion track which includes bongos and other Latin American style drums and there are plenty of guitar riffs in there.
Tee's Freeze Radio mix is up next and we are back to the usual mix – I have to say in Todd Terry's defence that he was told that Polydor would only be using 2 or 3 mixes maximum so he decided to do lots and lots of mixes. Each mix is slightly different and if only 2 of his mixes were on this cd we would be really impressed with both, but because we have 5 mixes they tend to get a little monotonous.
Track 7 is the last Todd Terry mix on this cd-single… Tee's extended mix is almost 6 minutes long and it combines all of the great vocal effects and instruments that make the other tracks listenable. An excellent extended track that is let down at the very last second by a terribly embarrassing ending.
Welcome to track 8 and is it worth the wait? It definitely is. The Hifi Crash remix 2 is an awesome club track that will have you dancing in no time. The vocal effects used in this are truly inventive and magical and the backing music is so cool – shame that only the chorus vocals are used, if this track had all the vocals in it then this would be THE track to play in the clubs. Perhaps the 12” single which has the Hifi Crash remix on it will contain the perfect remix of “Sleeping”…
Overall this is an excellent “mixes” cd single but the inclusion of 5 similar sounding Todd Terry mixes tend to make listening to the whole cd a little samey. Even so this is an excellent comeback single and I really can't wait for the album.
